This blog is dedicated to all the ladies that got engaged and have no clue on what's next!
Get ready for some insight!
As you are getting ready to book your vendors, make sure to take us into consideration! The ones that will help you look and feel amazing! Beauty services get looked past 90% of the time. Brides usually turn to the Knot, Wedding Wire, and other "wedding websites" and ladies... let me tell you something, these sites have information that should be retired, like now! One of the main myths is to book a trial a few months before your wedding, and then book your artist, well that's just not how it works anymore.
If you follow makeup artists on social media, you will notice many of them tell you to "get in touch if you want to reserve your wedding date" and I agree! New makeup artists get booked by those with smaller budgets (I started as a newbie 7 years ago and trust me I was busy busy busy!). Now as someone who offers a more personal service, I normally get booked 5 months to a year in advance. As you can imagine, we all get booked quickly! We all cover different areas of the industry and cater to different needs. Yes, I can assure each of us loves what we do, but just remember you are investing in your perfect day. The difference with an experienced makeup artist is that you will have more guidance. We have the experience, the knowledge, and you won't stress about the little things. We know how the industry works, we know the vendors, we communicate to make sure we get all the details ready for this amazing day to help you achieve the final goal! The beauty industry comes in many shapes and colors, pick the right one for you.
Now that we went over why some artists charge more than others... let's go over how to be ready for your trial! Here are some tips for you:
1- Scroll the internet! I have been selected as a top makeup artist for the past several years and I'm still not on the first page (on google or any other search engine). You never know who you mind find!
2- Check out Instagram! I read a study a few months ago that Instagram is used as a search engine. Instagram is the new Pinterest! Checking out their social media will tell you how cohesive their work is and what they specialize in. For me? I get hired to do "soft, glowy makeup", but trust me I can make you look as dramatic as you want without an issue!
3- Find your look! When I talk to my brides I ask them to polish their Pinterest ideas before meeting me. I recommend putting their hair up or down, off their face, part it to the side, to the other side. Each style for a few days. What do you get from this? You will learn what you like and dislike, you may find out you hate showing your ears or that you love your hair swept to the side. Now with this information, you can ask your artist to focus on your best features, making you feel comfortable and confident in your choices.
4- Dress, venue, season, and time! Not every look goes with your dress, not every dress goes with your venue! And not all looks are great for every season! You are unique, make every detail personalized.
5- Be aware that just because a picture on Pinterest looks beautiful it doesn't mean your eyes or hair will look the same! I suggest looking at a picture and describe what you like about it. Do you like it because the lip color is what you are looking for? Or is it because the lip color compliments the models in the picture? Remember pictures can be photoshop, don't fall in love with something that just isn't you.
6- I know for sure that most makeup/hair artists will not save a date without a contract being signed (I'm one of them). So, what does this mean? It means that you must lock them down. Make the commitment, let the fun begin, have your trial, and feel comfortable giving feedback.
7- Every artist is different, but we can all agree that it is best if you come without makeup and wearing a white top (try a color similar to your wedding dress). Come with clean, fresh hair. If we need texture, we can add powders, sprays to achieve that look. As for your skin, we love it even more if you have a skin regiment! That makes a huge difference!
8- On the day of your trial, your artist will go over so many questions...we are not trying to be nosy! We just want to know details! For me, I want to know how the look I create will translate into the unique setting you have created. I want to be inspired!
9- Don't bring all your bridesmaids or your future hubs with you! Try to pick just one to bring with you. The friend that you can feel completely yourself around, that will let the whole process happen and then give you feedback because she knows you. Remember, by this time you kinda know what you are looking for so don't let them talk you out of your look!
10- And lastly, ladies! Trials are for you to find the look and to make a few changes if need be. No, the trial will not be “the look”, you will want to pay attention throughout the day to see how the trial look reacts to a full day wear. Your artist will appreciate your feedback and will try their best to solve any request or issues.
Hope this information helps you in some way! Remember, stay calm and positive, in that moment your artist is your #1 fan!
